How to decide on your next Camping Destination

Updated: Jul 19, 2022

There are so many things to see in our beautiful country. Your next camping trip will depend on many things but you’ll either have to start with WHERE or WHEN. Below are some questions to ask yourself to help decide on your next camping destination.

Planning your next camping adventure

WHERE do we want to go?

Do you have an adventure wish list? Sometimes this is the first detail you know. If you have a destination in mind, ideally you can plan to go at the time of year that suits the location best.

If you don’t have a destination in mind, do you have a location preference? Do you fancy a Beach trip or would you prefer going Bush? National Park or Caravan Park?

WHEN can we get away?

One of the first things to consider is when can we get away? Are there any public holidays you can use to create a longer stay? Do you need to factor in school holidays – to go during or avoid. You need to know this so you have an idea of how many days/nights you can book for. Once we know this we can start piecing the trip together…

WHAT time of year is your trip? WHAT is the season?

The time of year is an important factor to consider when planning a camping trip. The season will give you a good indication of what the weather will be doing. Will you stay local? Head North? South? East? West? You might avoid heading North in Summer because of the heat and threat of cyclones. You might avoid heading south or west in Winter if you dislike the cold.

Knowing what weather to expect can also greatly help in the packing stage for things like clothes and equipment.

Other things to consider

Depending on where you’re headed, you’ll have other things to consider. How far away is your destination? Can you drive there in one day or will you have stops along the way?

Tide times are important if travelling along the beach. The wet season up North can create impassable roads and some places aren’t open in the off season. Do you have to travel on a barge or ferry to get there? Can you get to your destination when you want to go?

I hope after asking yourself these questions you can decide on your next camping destination. Once you know the answer, check out our blog on Preparing and Packing for camping!
