Rockhampton is an 8hr drive north of Brisbane. It is best known for Beef as it has the biggest number of Cattle in the country but there is plenty more to see and do around here. Check out our list of Things to do around Rocky...
Kershaw Gardens
Whether you are staying in town or just passing through, Kershaw Gardens is a great lunch spot and kids park play. It also has a great water play area for the kids, a great spot to cool off! The park is huge with all facilities including toilets, cold showers and BBQs. There is also a free council rest stop here but you must be fully self-contained.
Capricorn Caves
We did the 45min Cathedral Cave Tour. You will be in darkness; unless you visit during the Summer Solstice which is around midday during December & January when the sun & earth align to allow the sun to penetrate through a vertical shaft and illuminate the underground. It is an easy and interesting walk through the caves. You are treated to the amazing acoustics the Cathedral Cave has to offer in complete darkness! Certainly an experience. Fun fact, the floor is made up of compacted bat poo!
Rockhampton Zoo
A small zoo that has some interesting animals! The zoo is open everyday 10am-4pm and is Free. It took us approximately 45mins to wander through.
Fitzroy River
If you're into fishing then try your luck on the Fitzroy. Target Barramundi & King Salmon here and don't forget you're in croc country.
Yeppoon Lagoon & Singing Ship
A 45min drive East to the coast you'll find Yeppoon and it's awesome lagoon. It is situated right on the waterfront and you'll also find a kids waterplay area a short walk down the beach too. You can spend the day here easily.
Afterwards take a drive to the Singing Ship - a monument that commemorates Captain James Cook. The lookout here is beautiful as it overlooks the Keppel's.
Byfield National Park
Explore the Byfield National Park in your 4wd. Drive an hour north of Rocky, and if you're visiting in a peak time, leave early in the morning to grab a spot along the banks of Upper Stony Creek. Enjoy the morning swimming and exploring here. I recommend taking mozzie spray and look out for Stonefish here - we wore water shoes here as a precaution. Afterwards tackle "Big Sandy" on your way to 9 Mile Beach. You can also access Five Rocks Beach along this track and you can camp at both beaches. Just remember - this is croc country.
Keppel Islands
Last but far from least is the Keppel Islands. If you have a boat then launch at Rosslyn Bay Marina (45mins from Rocky) and take the 20min drive out to the beautiful Islands and reef for great swimming, snorkeling and fishing.
You can easily spend a week or more exploring all these Things to do around Rocky. If you'd like more info on camping out on the Islands, check out our blog on Humpy Island and start planning your Rocky adventure.
