Kinkuna Beach is in the Burrum Coast National Park, between Woodgate & Bundaberg, only 4 hours drive from Brisbane. Access is 4wd only and you can camp right on the beach, behind the dunes.
Coming from the south, you turn east onto Lucketts Rd (that turns into Goodwood Rd); just before Childers. We topped up our fuel here as there are no servos once you take the turn off.
40mins after the turn off you come to Palm Beach Rd which is 4kms of gravel road.
We let our tyres down once the track got sandy. It takes approximately 1hr from the highway to the beach. The track was dry and dusty. It goes between hard gravel base to soft sand.
Kinkuna Beach stretches 11km between Coonar Creek to the north and Theodolite River to the South. These are great swimming/fishing/picnic spots. There is a smaller creek at the southern end, One Mile Creek, which is impassable at high tide and cuts access to or from Theodolite River.
One Mile Creek runs behind some of the southern camp areas. It is tidal and a great swimming spot for young kids. Mudcrabs and estuary fish can be found in here. We also took a little tinny and launched off the beach out the front of camp. We didn't catch any keepers though.
You cannot drive on the beach at high tide. There is a track most of the way along behind the dunes, through camping areas, however you are not guaranteed a clear path if others are camped along the track. You are best to keep a close eye on the tides when you're here. Plan your arrival and departure accordingly.
You need a camping permit if you plan on staying overnight. Kinkuna Beach is part of a national park, so you can book your stay on the Qld Parks website. It currently costs $6.75 pp/pn. You must be fully self sufficient as there are no toilets or showers, no access to fresh water or rubbish disposal. The closest fresh water available is 40minutes south to Woodgate or you could go north to Bundaberg which will take slightly longer.
If you enjoy beach camping, Kinkuna Beach is an awesome spot. Keep an eye out for our blog on all your beach camping options close to home in SE Qld.
